There is always a moment at a championship when the waiting finally comes to an end.
The players have trained for months. The coaches have prepared their teams. The bags are packed and the flags are ready. But until the draw is made, no one knows exactly what lies ahead.
For the young athletes arriving in Cairo for the All Africa U-19 Championships 2026, that moment came during the Team Managers Meeting, where the draw for the Junior Mixed Team Championships was conducted ahead of the opening matches.
And for Mauritius, there is an added meaning to this year’s competition.
They arrive in Egypt as the defending champions, having won the 2024 All Africa U-19 Mixed Team Championships in Thiès, Senegal, held from 12 to 19 August 2024. In the final, Mauritius defeated Egypt 3–1 to lift the continental title, with the How Hong sisters, Chiara and Elsa, playing a decisive role in the victory.
Now, a new group stands between Mauritius and another opportunity to fight for the title.
The reigning champions have been drawn in Group C, alongside Ghana and Senegal. It is a group that carries its own story, particularly with Senegal being the country where Mauritius celebrated its triumph two years ago.
For the Mauritian players, however, that success belongs to the past. A new championship means a new challenge, and the team will have to start again from the first match.
Elsewhere, Group A will see Algeria, Uganda and Zambia go head-to-head, while Group B brings together hosts Egypt, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tunisia. The Egyptian team will have the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd, while the other teams will arrive with their own ambitions of making a strong start to the championship.
The group stage is often where a team championship begins to reveal its character. It is not simply about one player winning one match. Every point matters, and every player can have a role to play. Singles, doubles and mixed doubles all contribute to the overall result, meaning that teams need depth, discipline and the ability to respond when a tie does not go according to plan.
That is what makes the Junior Mixed Team Championships so different from the individual events that will follow.
For the young players, there is also something bigger at stake. The Under-19 level is where many future senior internationals begin to experience the demands of continental competition. For some, Cairo could be another step in a long career. For others, it could be the tournament where they first make their name on the African stage.
The championships will be hosted at the Cairo Stadium Indoor Hall, with the Junior Mixed Team Championships scheduled from 27 to 29 September, before the Junior Individual Championships take place from 30 September to 3 October.
The draw has now been made. The groups are known. The waiting is over.
For Mauritius, the challenge is clear: Ghana and Senegal stand in their way at the beginning of their title defence.
But nobody is giving away a continental title.
The reigning champions will have to earn their next chapter, one match, one point and one shuttle at a time.
And in Cairo, the journey begins.
