The Team Event of the first-ever African School Games 2025 ended on a high note on 29 July 2025 in Setif, Algeria. For three days, from 27 to 29 July, young athletes from seven African countries took part in the Mixed Team Relay. The event brought together school-aged participants from across the continent, competing with energy, determination, and a strong spirit of unity. Organised by the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA), the Team Event was a key part of this new sports festival, designed to give young people a chance to grow, learn, and build friendships through sport.

The African School Games are the result of a historic partnership between ANOCA, the International School Sport Federation (ISF), and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The initiative reflects a shared commitment to developing the next generation of African athletes and reinforcing Olympic values across the continent.
The Games officially began with a colourful and vibrant opening ceremony on 26 July 2025 at the 19 May 1956 Stadium in Annaba, gathering athletes, officials, and fans in a celebration of African youth, sport, and fraternity.
Key Objectives of the African School Games:
- Identify and nurture young African sports talents
- Strengthen the technical and physical capacities of school-age athletes
- Promote Olympic values including friendship, solidarity, and fair play
- Strengthen unity and cultural exchange among African nations
These objectives were clearly demonstrated throughout the Team Event, which highlighted the values of teamwork, respect, and development through sport.

Host nation Algeria impressed with a consistent and strategic performance, ultimately clinching the gold medal.
Nigeria, with their dynamic energy and fast-paced plays, secured the silver, while Egypt and Ghana shared the bronze medal after strong showings in the earlier rounds.
The competition was marked by fair play and discipline, and the young athletes demonstrated not just skill, but an eagerness to learn and represent their countries with pride.
The Mixed Team Relay proved to be more than just a competition, it was a celebration of the future of African sport. With national flags raised and anthems sung, the pride of these young athletes was felt throughout Setif and beyond.
For many of these participants, this was their first international experience, offering invaluable exposure, learning opportunities, and motivation to pursue higher achievements in upcoming competitions. The athletes, coaches, and officials expressed deep appreciation for the platform provided by ANOCA and its partners.
With the Team Event concluded, attention now turns to the Individual Events, which are set to continue until 31 July2025. These will feature 5 Events and offer further opportunities for athletes to demonstrate their individual talents and push their limits to be crowned.
