Shuttle Time Tutor, Mauritius Badminton Association
Childhood Days
I was born in Cairo into a family deeply rooted in the education sector. Despite their professional commitments, my family has always been passionate about sports and spent effort and resources to foster a supportive environment for me and my siblings in sports.
First Experience
I was eight when I saw badminton for the first time. My father took me to a club to play another sport and while waiting I saw some players playing badminton. I fell in love with it and told my father I wanted to try badminton and to postpone joining the other sport. Since then I’ve never stopped playing badminton.
First Impressions
I was so impressed by the agility of the players, the tricks and the speed of the shuttle and I was so curious about the sport. Eventually I started to play national tournaments. At 15 I join the Egyptian national team and my first championship was the All Africa Juniors in Zambia in 2001.
Memorable Events
There are so many memories in badminton, winning and losing moments. My travels have taught me a lot and made me friends all over the world, some of whom are my lifetime friends.
What Badminton Means
Now, it’s about passion more than only competing as a player — it’s about helping children. It’s about sparking joy through participation and giving every child a chance to be part of something unique, no matter their background, gender, or ability. It’s about building skills, friendships and long-lasting hobbies for their entire life.
Developing Badminton in the Community
In Mauritius, badminton is regarded as one of the most popular sports in the community. Consequently, introducing Shuttle Time to schoolchildren was a seamless process. The students enjoy the programme and eagerly anticipate each session.
Impact of Shuttle Time
Shuttle Time has made a significant impact in our region by promoting greater interest and participation in badminton among students and introducing proper basic skills to the school PE teachers. It has helped develop their skills, foster teamwork, and boost confidence. Additionally, Shuttle Time has contributed to a healthier lifestyle and increased awareness of sport within the community, creating a more active and engaged environment for young athletes.
Lessons from Shuttle Time
The biggest lesson I have learned from working as a Shuttle Time Tutor in Mauritius is the importance of fostering enthusiasm and confidence among youngsters. It has taught me that patience, encouragement, and tailored coaching are essential in helping students develop their skills and love for the sport. Additionally, I have gained a deeper understanding of how structured programmes can positively influence community engagement and promote healthy and active lifestyles.
