The Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) is proud to announce that Mariam Eniola Bolaji of Nigeria has been awarded the 2024 Africa Women in Badminton Award (AWIBA). The award was presented during the BCA and BWF Annual General Meetings (AGM) 2025, held in Xiamen, China.
This prestigious award recognises Mariam’s exceptional journey in badminton, from her early days on the courts in Nigeria to her historic achievement at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, where she won a bronze medal, making her the first African athlete to win an Olympic or Paralympic medal in badminton.
Mariam’s story is one of true courage, perseverance, and dedication. As a woman in sport, she has faced many challenges, but her strong will and fighting spirit have taken her to the world stage. Her performance in Paris has not only brought pride to Nigeria but has also inspired young girls and women across Africa to believe in their dreams.
In her emotional speech after receiving the award, Mariam said to BCA:
“To be a woman in sports is not easy, but I am proud today to have brought back a well-deserved bronze medal for my country and also for the whole of Africa. This first-ever Olympic medal is truly a testament to my training, perseverance, and determination that has driven me to believe in myself. I also want to thank the Badminton Federation in Nigeria, Badminton Confederation Africa, and lastly my coach for believing in me till the very end. This has really boosted me in my endeavours.”
The Africa Women in Badminton Award was created by the BCA to honour women who have made a significant contribution to the sport, whether through performance, leadership, or community impact. Mariam Eniola Bolaji has done all three. She is not only an outstanding athlete but also a role model who uplifts others through her actions and achievements.
Mariam’s medal in Paris 2024 is more than just a personal victory, it is a victory for all African women in sport. It proves that with the right support, guidance, and determination, African athletes can compete and succeed at the highest level.
The BCA also takes this moment to thank the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, her dedicated coaching team, and all those who have contributed to Mariam’s development and success. Their joint efforts have helped shape a champion and a continental icon.
Mariam’s journey continues to inspire, and we are confident that this award will further motivate her and many other young girls across Africa to dream big, work hard, and never give up.
Congratulations, Mariam!
You have made your country and continent proud. Africa celebrates you.
