Mauritius continued its strong start to the individual competition at the Africa AirBadminton Championships as Tevin Bhoyroo, Tevin Dookhee and Ashvin Lubah won two consecutive matches to reach the men’s triples quarter-finals at Aero Beach in Entebbe.
The Mauritian trio began their knockout campaign in the Round of 16 against Comoros. B. Chamsidine, I. El-Haya-I and S. Mohamed stood in their way, but Mauritius made a confident start and took control of the match.
Bhoyroo, Dookhee and Lubah won the opening game 9–4 before extending their advantage with a 9–2 victory in the second. Comoros responded strongly in the third game and pushed Mauritius into a much closer contest. The final game went beyond the usual nine points, with Mauritius eventually securing a 12–10 win to complete a 3–0 victory.
The result sent the Mauritian trio into the quarter-finals, where they faced Rwanda’s Jean Hakizimana, Yves Niyomukiza and H. Tuyizere.
Mauritius once again started well, taking the first game 9–6. The team then continued to control the match in the second, winning 9–4 and moving within one game of the semi-finals.
Rwanda needed to find a response in the third game, but Mauritius did not allow the match to develop into another close contest. Bhoyroo, Dookhee and Lubah closed out the third 9–1, completing another 3–0 victory.
The two wins mean that Mauritius reached the quarter-finals without dropping a game. The team also showed its ability to deal with different situations, particularly in the Round of 16 when Comoros pushed the third game to 12–10.
The Mauritian trio now moves into the next stage of the competition with a place in the semi-finals at stake. After two convincing performances, the team will be looking to maintain its form as the competition moves closer to the medal matches.
The men’s triples event continues to provide strong competition in Entebbe, with teams from across Africa battling for a place on the podium.
