The Africa AirBadminton Championships 2024 launched today at the beautiful Mont Choisy Beach in Mauritius, marking a significant milestone for African badminton with the participation of Comoros in their first-ever Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) tournament. As the Championships opened, the Comorian team’s debut drew excitement and pride from fans and players alike, celebrating this major step in expanding the sport across the continent.
Mauritius faced off against Comoros in the opening tie of the day, with the host team emerging victorious with a score of 60-9. Despite the loss, Comoros’ participation alone represented an inspiring achievement for their players and supporters. It was especially challenging for Comoros, as they could not field a complete team with female players for this tie, yet they competed with determination and spirit.
In another closely contested match, South Africa took on Tunisia and secured a win with a score of 60-49. South Africa’s Amy Ackerman noted the intensity of the competition, sharing, “We are extremely happy to have won our match against Tunisia, and it was not an easy one as Tunisia is also a complete team.”
Later, in a thrilling upset, Tunisia managed to defeat the host country Mauritius in an incredibly close match that ended 60-58. Tunisia’s Ouzayer Khayati celebrated the victory, expressing to BCA TV, “We are on the right track as we won against Mauritius, and in the previous tie, we lost closely to South Africa. Now, we have to focus on the upcoming matches, and I believe that if we continue on the same path, we will be victorious.”
Uganda concluded Day 1 with a strong performance, winning 60-8 over Comoros in their historic first tournament experience. Muzafwa Lubega from Uganda shared his thoughts on Comoros’ participation, stating, “This is our first-ever participation in an airbadminton competition, so we will do our best to win a medal for our country.” Comoros’ involvement brought added enthusiasm to the Championships, underscoring the growing reach of badminton across Africa and the importance of events like these for encouraging new teams.
