MEN’S SINGLES TOP SEED JULIEN PAUL RETIRES AS KALOMBO MULENGA CAUSE A MAJOR UPSET

Top seed Olympian and African Champion Georges Julien Paul had a disastrous day on the second day of the All Africa Individual Championships 2021. Playing against the African Youth Olympics 2018 bronze medallist Mohamed Mostafa Kamel, Julien Paul started uncharacteristically, making lots of mistakes enabling Mostafa to take control of the match in the early stages of the game.

“I was not very focused at the start, and I got nervous. but at the end of the first set, I was relaxed and was playing better.” Said Julien Paul

He later turned the tables on Mostafa, and as he was overtaking him in the dying stages of the first game, he had a nasty fall from a jump smash move tearing his Achilles tendon at 18-17, forcing him to retire and concede the match. Julien Paul was undoubtably one of the favorites to reach the medal bracket in Men’s Doubles alongside his long-term partner Aatish Lubah. We wish Julien and all the other injured players in this tournament a speedy recovery.

Julien Paul’s injury did not dampen the spirits of the tournament as the young Robert White from South Africa, fresh from the All Africa under 19 championships, caused a major upset beating the experienced Abderrahime Belarbi from Algeria 2-1. Known for his hard-hitting skills, Belarbi took the first game 23-21 but he was no match for Robert’s suave moves denying him a chance to smash in the second and final game losing 21-18, 21-15.

“It was a tough match with a good experienced player. This is my first time to play in the senior event, and it was challenging, but I am happy I was able to win,” said Robert.

Robert won silver in the Men’s Singles, Gold in the Men’s doubles, and Gold in the team event of the All Africa under 19 Championships in Benin, proving that the BCA competition structure is working. Robert later lost to Mostafa Kamel 2-0 for a place in the Semi-finals.

Kalombo Mulenga was also not to be left behind in the David Goliath story. The young Zambian talented player dubbed as the “King of comebacks” dispatched the experienced Youcef Sabri Medel from Algeria fresh from the TotalEnergies Thomas & Uber Cup in his classic, 2 games to 1 style.

“Playing in the All Africa Championships is not an easy thing. The competition is very tough and requires a lot of focus and concentration. It was very tough playing from the first game to the final game, playing the number 3 seed of the tournament.” He said.

Kalombo has had all his games apart from one extend to 3 games. Medel got distracted in the game, deciding to concentrate on arguing with the umpire to a point where he was rewarded with a yellow card for his troubles.

“It was a good feeling for me because I have prepared myself well for such a tournament, and I am now reaping the fruits of my hard work. I hope to keep the same momentum throughout the tournament.” He added.

Kalombo later beat Abdelrahman Abdelhakim from Egypt 2-0 to qualify for the semifinals.

In the women’s singles, top seed Doha Hany struggled to overcome a resolute Husina Kobugabe and needed 3 games to overcome the Ugandan.

” It was my first women singles match in this tournament and it was tough in the beginning. I committed so many mistakes, although I won, I am disappointed with my performance,” She said.

” I went on court with nothing to lose so I decided to see how well I can play against a very good player in Africa. I enjoyed my moment on court.” said the proud Husina Kobugabe.

Doha also struggled in the quarterfinals against Uganda’s Gladys Mbabazi, who took the second game to the wire. Serving at 21, Gladys had an opportunity to cancel Doha’s match point opportunity, but she ended up making a meal out of a simple quarter court lift from Doha missing the shuttle.

The 20th edition of the All Africa Senior Championships 2021 will conclude on 28 October with the semi-finals and finals of the individuals event. The matches will be live streamed on the BCA YouTube page

L’Olympien et champion d’Afrique Georges Julien Paul, tête de série, a connu une journée désastreuse lors de la deuxième journée des championnats d’Afrique individuels 2021. Opposé au médaillé de bronze des Jeux Olympiques de la Jeunesse 2018, Mohamed Mostafa Kamel, Julien Paul a commencé de manière inhabituelle, commettant de nombreuses erreurs qui ont permis à Mostafa de prendre le contrôle du match dès le début de la partie.

“Je n’étais pas très concentré au début, et j’étais nerveux, mais à la fin du premier set, j’étais détendu et je jouais mieux.” a déclaré Julien Paul.

Il a ensuite renversé la vapeur sur Mostafa, et alors qu’il le dépassait dans les derniers instants du premier jeu, il a fait une vilaine chute sur un smash sauté, se déchirant le tendon d’Achille à 18-17, l’obligeant à abandonner et à concéder le match. Julien Paul était sans aucun doute l’un des favoris pour atteindre le podium en double masculin aux côtés de son partenaire de longue date Aatish Lubah. Nous souhaitons à Julien et à tous les autres joueurs blessés dans ce tournoi un prompt rétablissement.

La blessure de Julien Paul n’a pas entamé l’esprit du tournoi, puisque le jeune Robert White d’Afrique du Sud, tout juste sorti des Championnats d’Afrique des moins de 19 ans, a créé la surprise en battant l’expérimenté Abderrahime Belarbi d’Algérie 2-1. Connu pour ses coups durs, Belarbi a remporté le premier set 23-21, mais il n’a pas résisté aux coups suaves de Robert, qui n’a pas eu l’occasion de frapper dans le deuxième et dernier set, perdu 21-18, 21-15.

“C’était un match difficile contre un joueur expérimenté. C’est la première fois que je participe à une compétition senior, et c’était un défi, mais je suis heureux d’avoir pu gagner”, a déclaré Robert.

Robert a remporté l’argent dans le simple masculin, l’or dans le double masculin et l’or dans l’épreuve par équipe des Championnats Africains des moins de 19 ans au Bénin, prouvant ainsi que la structure de compétition de la BCA fonctionne. Robert a ensuite perdu contre Mostafa Kamel 2-0 pour une place en demi-finale.

Kalombo Mulenga n’a pas été oublié dans l’histoire de David et Goliath. Le jeune joueur zambien surnommé le “roi des retours” a éliminé l’expérimenté Youcef Sabri Medel d’Algérie, tout juste sorti de la TotalEnergies Thomas & Uber Cup, dans son style classique, 2 jeux à 1.

“Jouer dans les Championnats d’Afrique n’est pas une chose facile. La compétition est très dure et demande beaucoup de concentration. C’était très dur de jouer du premier au dernier match, face à la tête de série numéro 3 du tournoi.” Il a déclaré.

Kalombo a vu tous ses matchs, à l’exception d’un seul, se prolonger jusqu’à trois matchs. Medel s’est laissé distraire pendant le match, décidant de se concentrer sur une dispute avec l’arbitre, à tel point qu’il a été récompensé par un carton jaune.

“C’était un bon sentiment pour moi car je me suis bien préparé pour un tel tournoi, et je récolte maintenant les fruits de mon dur labeur. J’espère garder la même dynamique tout au long du tournoi.” Il a ajouté.

Kalombo a ensuite battu l’Égyptien Abdelrahman Abdelhakim 2-0 pour se qualifier pour les demi-finales.

Dans le Simple Dame, la tête de série Doha Hany a eu du mal à venir à bout d’une Husina Kobugabe résolue et a eu besoin de 3 jeux pour vaincre l’Ougandaise.

” C’était mon premier match de simple féminin dans ce tournoi et c’était difficile au début. J’ai commis tellement d’erreurs, bien que j’ai gagné, je suis déçue de ma performance “, a-t-elle déclaré.

” Je suis entrée sur le court sans rien à perdre, j’ai donc décidé de voir comment je peux jouer contre une très bonne joueuse africaine. J’ai apprécié mon moment sur le court”, a déclaré la fière Husina Kobugabe.

Doha a également lutté en quart de finale contre l’Ougandaise Gladys Mbabazi, qui a mené le deuxième match jusqu’au bout. Servant à 21, Gladys a eu l’occasion d’annuler le volant de match de Doha, mais elle a fini par faire un simple lever de quart de terrain de Doha manquant le volant.

La 20ème édition des Championnats d’Afrique 2021 se terminera le 28 octobre avec les demi-finales et les finales de l’épreuve individuelle. Les matchs seront diffusés en direct sur la page YouTube de la BCA.
