On Day 2 of the Africa AirBadminton Championships, the Team Relay moves into the knockout stage at Aero Beach in Entebbe, and the mood around the courts is changing. The smiles and relief of making it through the group stage are slowly being replaced by something else: focus, pressure and the knowledge that one match could bring a team closer to the final, while one defeat could end the journey.
From this point on, there are no second chances.
At the top of the draw, Egypt enter the knockout stage as the No. 1 seed, with Benin seeded No. 2. Both teams now wait in the semi-final, watching the battles below them to find out who will earn the right to challenge them.
The first path to the semi-final begins with Algeria against Burkina Faso.
For both sides, this is a fresh start. Everything that happened in the group stage now matters only as preparation. The players will step onto the sand knowing exactly what is at stake: win, and Egypt is waiting. Lose, and their Team Relay campaign comes to an end.
There is no room for a slow start.
On the other side of the draw, Mauritius will face Rwanda for the second place in the semi-finals.
It is another meeting where the pressure will be felt from the very first point. The winner will earn a place against second-seeded Benin, bringing them one step closer to the final.
For Mauritius, the knockout stage is another opportunity to build on what they have shown so far in Entebbe. Rwanda, meanwhile, will be looking to continue their campaign and keep their hopes alive.
And that is what makes the knockout stage different.
During the group matches, teams could recover from a difficult moment. Here, they cannot. Every point carries more weight. Every mistake feels bigger. Every comeback could keep a team’s tournament alive.
As Day 2 begins, four teams are still standing on the two paths leading towards the semi-finals: Algeria, Burkina Faso, Mauritius and Rwanda.
Waiting at the end of those paths are Egypt and Benin.
The sand at Aero Beach is the same.
But the stakes are not.
