There was still hope around Aero Beach.
Playing in front of their home crowd, Uganda stepped onto the sand knowing they had little room for mistakes. The support from the crowd was there, but so was the pressure. This was their home, their tournament, and a chance to show what they could do on the African stage.
For a while, Uganda kept the dream alive.
Against Burkina Faso, the two sides stayed close throughout the tie. Uganda went into the final stage just five points behind, 40–45, leaving everything to play for. But Burkina Faso held their nerve when it mattered most, eventually taking the match 60–53.
It was a difficult result for the hosts, but there was no time to dwell on it.
Mauritius was waiting.
The Ugandans came back onto the court and fought again. They started brightly, winning the men’s doubles 15–10, and the crowd had something to believe in. Mauritius, however, slowly found their rhythm. The Mauritian pairings extended their lead through the following stages, and by the final stage, Uganda could not close the gap.
Mauritius finished 60–46 winners.
And just like that, Uganda’s Team Championship journey came to an end.
For the hosts, it was a painful goodbye. But the result does not tell the whole story. Uganda kept fighting, point after point, even when the pressure was growing and the margin was slipping away. In a tournament played on home sand, in front of their own people, they gave the crowd something to remember: a team that did not give up.
Elsewhere at Aero Beach, the afternoon brought its own stories.
Benin continued their strong campaign with a convincing 60–37 win over Tunisia. They controlled the match from the opening women’s doubles and never allowed Tunisia to find a way back.
Rwanda also came through strongly against Burundi, winning 60–40. Burundi stayed within reach early on, but Rwanda gradually pulled away as the match progressed.
Egypt added another important result, defeating Burundi 60–19, while the competition continued to take shape across the groups.
But for Uganda, the numbers will matter less than the memory of playing at home.
The dream of reaching the next stage is over. The fight, however, is what the Ugandan players and their supporters will carry with them.
Sometimes, sport does not give you the ending you hoped for. But there can still be something special in the way a team fights until the very last point.
And Uganda did exactly that.
