The much-anticipated Africa AirBadminton Championship is set to kick off tomorrow on the stunning shores of Mont Choisy Beach in Mauritius. Five nations: South Africa, Uganda, Comoros, Tunisia, and host nation Mauritius are competing in this thrilling outdoor event. Against the backdrop of Mauritius’ paradise-like scenery, players and fans alike are ready for an unforgettable championship.
Today, November 13, participating players gathered for practice sessions, getting a feel for the beach arena where all matches will take place. This practice day gave players the opportunity to test the venue and adapt to the outdoor conditions, which add an exciting twist to the game of AirBadminton.
In an exclusive interview with BCA TV, Deidre Laurens, the BCA Athlete Chairperson, shared her excitement about competing in her first AirBadminton Championship. Representing South Africa, she said,
“This is the first time that I am participating in an AirBadminton Championship, and I am proud to represent my country South Africa in this prestigious event. It is true that the guidelines and rules are completely opposite traditional badminton, but it is so much fun to play. AirBadminton being the new outdoor sport is an opportunity for players to re-convert themselves after their Badminton career or simply just start a career young as it will keep on growing and evolving.”
Shyamli Goneeadry from Mauritius also shared her enthusiasm with BCA TV, expressing pride in competing on her home soil.
“I am extremely happy to participate in my first-ever AirBadminton Championship, as the best part is that it is on home soil. During training, I managed to see some other countries, and I can say that the competition will be very tough. The weather conditions are excellent, and we can proudly say that Team Mauritius is set for the competition.”
AirBadminton, a relatively new adaptation of badminton designed for outdoor play, is rapidly gaining popularity around the world. With unique rules and conditions, the sport offers new challenges and experiences for both seasoned badminton players and newcomers. The Africa AirBadminton Championship promises to be a vibrant showcase of this evolving sport and its future in Africa.
