Three Brothers Changing Lives in Mozambique through Para badminton.

Located in South-eastern Africa, the Portuguese-speaking country is fast rising from the ashes. In the wake of the Cyclone Idai disaster and the Covid-19 Pandemic, three brothers Ibrahimo, Zulficar, and Idriss Musaggy have found solace in bringing the Para badminton sport to heal their communities.

Mozambique is one of the countries funded through the Agitos Grant Support Program to attend the Agitos/BWF Technical workshop in preparation for their inaugural participation at the Uganda Para badminton International 2021. The workshop aims at elevating the standards of countries to manage and develop Para badminton.

In an interview with BCA Tv, Ibrahimo Mussagy, the Secretary-General of Mozambique badminton narrated his story.

“Our Journey started in 2018 when BCA graciously invited my brother Zulficar Mussagy to attend the 2018 edition of the Agitos Foundation Para badminton workshop. At the time, we didn’t have any structures to support the formation of Para badminton due to the lack of support from our various stakeholders.

Armed with the knowledge from the workshop, my brothers and I embarked on establishing Para badminton without any support, but it was a fulfilling endeavour.

It took a lot of personal sacrifices, a combined effort from my brothers, and our never-ending love for Badminton to overcome the myriads of problems thrown our way.

The disabled community in Mozambique was quick to take up Para badminton. Instead of training new players, the trio opted to use the already existing players from other sports. The results were instantaneous, more and more players joined Para badminton which helped them get the government’s attention, who have been now more cooperative. Other partners like Light for the World also came to their assistance.

“The turnaround was magical, from being a sport looked down on and ridiculed to an overnight success, our players now can have something to smile about.

Oucle Langa a coach and trainer of the team attending the 2021 edition of the Agitos Foundation in Kampala, Uganda, is one of the beneficiaries of the success the Mozambican trio has received.

“I work for the association of disabled persons in Beira. I am not a badminton specialist, but Zulficar approached us with the knowledge he gained from the workshop he attended here in Uganda, which enabled us to set up Para badminton in our association. We have players with both physical disabilities and those who are blind, deaf, and dumb involved in other sports. We are here to add Para badminton to the list.

As people living with disabilities, we have faced many life challenges, but we are optimistic that Para badminton will help change the fortunes of our players.

“My biggest takeaway from this workshop is that the BWF through, the Female Participation Grant, has invited more female participants for this workshop. I am taking photos to show our female players back home that, they too can also play Para badminton and change their lives”, Said Maria Clara a coach with the Mozambican team.

Gaily Guilleme a BWF Coach involved with Coach development training at the workshop expressed his satisfaction in seeing the progress made by Africa in Para badminton.

” I am very happy to see the progress made by Africa in Para badminton, I have been involved with the Agitos Foundation coach education activity in Africa since 2018 and my goal is to give Africa a chance to bring athletes to Para badminton and to help them to understand and play Para badminton so that they represent Africa in International tournaments. This year we had African players in the Paralympics and at the World Championships in Spain, it was humbling to watch Africa win Gold in the Sl3 category.

Trois frères changent des vies au Mozambique grâce au Para badminton.

Situé dans le sud-est de l’Afrique, ce pays lusophone renaît rapidement de ses cendres. À la suite de la catastrophe du cyclone Idai et de la pandémie de Covid-19, trois frères, Ibrahimo, Zulficar et Idriss Musaggy, ont trouvé du réconfort en apportant le sport du Para badminton pour guérir leurs communautés.

Le Mozambique est l’un des pays financés par le programme de subvention Agitos pour participer à l’atelier technique Agitos/BWF en vue de leur participation inaugurale aux Internationaux de Para Badminton 2021. L’atelier vise à élever les standards des pays pour gérer et développer le Para badminton.

Dans une interview avec BCA Tv, Ibrahimo Mussagy, le Secrétaire Général de la Fédération Mozambicaine de Badminton a raconté son histoire.

“Notre voyage a commencé en 2018 lorsque la BCA a gracieusement invité mon frère Zulficar Mussagy à participer à l’édition 2018 de l’atelier Para badminton de la Fondation Agitos. À l’époque, nous n’avions pas de structure pour soutenir la formation du Para badminton en raison du manque de soutien de nos différentes parties prenantes.

Armés des connaissances acquises lors de l’atelier, mes frères et moi nous nous sommes lancés dans l’établissement du Para badminton sans aucun soutien, mais ce fut une entreprise enrichissante.

Il a fallu beaucoup de sacrifices personnels, un effort combiné de mes frères et notre amour éternel pour le badminton pour surmonter les myriades de problèmes qui se sont présentés à nous.

La communauté des handicapés du Mozambique a rapidement adopté le Para badminton. Au lieu de former de nouveaux joueurs, le trio a choisi d’utiliser les joueurs déjà existants issus d’autres sports. Les résultats ont été immédiats : de plus en plus de joueurs ont rejoint le Para badminton, ce qui a permis d’attirer l’attention du gouvernement, qui s’est montré plus coopératif. D’autres partenaires, comme Light for the World, leur ont également prêté main forte.

“Le retournement de situation a été magique : d’un sport méprisé et ridiculisé, il est devenu un succès du jour au lendemain, et nos joueurs peuvent maintenant avoir une raison de sourire.

Oucle Langa, entraîneur et formateur de l’équipe qui participe à l’édition 2021 de la Fondation Agitos à Kampala, en Ouganda, est l’un des bénéficiaires du succès rencontré par le trio mozambicain.

“Je travaille pour l’association des personnes handicapées de Beira. Je ne suis pas un spécialiste du badminton, mais Zulficar nous a fait part des connaissances qu’il a acquises lors de l’atelier auquel il a participé ici en Ouganda, ce qui nous a permis de mettre en place le Para badminton dans notre association. Nous avons des joueurs souffrant de handicaps physiques et des joueurs aveugles, sourds et muets qui pratiquent d’autres sports. Nous sommes ici pour ajouter le Para badminton à la liste.

En tant que personnes vivant avec un handicap, nous avons dû faire face à de nombreux défis dans la vie, mais nous sommes optimistes et pensons que le para badminton contribuera à changer le destin de nos joueurs.

“Ce que je retiens de cet atelier, c’est que la BWF, par le biais de la Female Participation Grant, a invité davantage de femmes à participer à cet atelier. Je prends des photos pour montrer à nos joueuses à la maison qu’elles peuvent aussi jouer au badminton et changer leur vie”, a déclaré Maria Clara, entraîneur de l’équipe mozambicaine.

Gaily Guillaume, un entraîneur de la BWF impliqué dans la formation des entraîneurs lors de l’atelier, a exprimé sa satisfaction de voir les progrès réalisés par l’Afrique en matière de Para badminton.

” Je suis très heureux de voir les progrès réalisés par l’Afrique dans le Para badminton, je suis impliqué dans l’activité de formation des entraîneurs de la Fondation Agitos en Afrique depuis 2018 et mon objectif est de donner à l’Afrique une chance d’amener des athlètes au Para badminton et de les aider à comprendre et à jouer au Para badminton afin qu’ils représentent l’Afrique dans les tournois internationaux. Cette année, nous avons eu des joueurs africains aux Jeux Paralympiques et lors des Championnats du Monde en Espagne, c’était une leçon d’humilité de voir l’Afrique remporter l’or dans la catégorie SL3.
