BOLAJI MARIAM ENIOLA ROAD TO PARA BADMINTON GLORY

Nigeria’s Eniola Bolaji stunned the more fancied Ukrainian Oksana Kozyna 18-21,21-14,21-18 in the SL3 category to win the first-ever gold medal by an African Para badminton player outside the continent at the Spanish Para badminton International Championship which ended on Sunday 16th May 2021. Eniola put up a spirited fight to come from one set down to become the eventual winner in her debut tournament.

Born on the 21st of September 2005 in Ibadan, and brought up in Kwara state Nigeria, Eniola was discovered 4 years ago and was coached by the late Coach Bello Oyebanji who lost his life in preparation for this tournament. Her first interest was tennis but the late coach saw her potential in Para badminton.

“The late Coach was like a father to me, a man of discipline who supported me. He inspired me to take up Para badminton instead of tennis and I am happy with the results” She said.

Eniola’s fairy tale started when she was selected for inclusion in the Nigerian Para badminton team as a Junior player but due to lack of sponsorship, she was not exposed to tournaments. Her fate would however change in 2019 when she attended the BCA Para badminton Athlete Workshop held in Abuja, Nigeria, and qualified for the BWF Female Participation Grant program which enabled her to attend her first-ever tournament. The BWF Para badminton female participation annual grant offers opportunities for female Para athletes to apply for financial support to attend and be internationally classified at several BWF sanctioned tournaments. To be considered to receive the participation grant from the BWF, athletes must be affiliated to their National Badminton Federation, be eligible to be internationally classified by the BWF in one of the six Para badminton sports classes (WH1, WH2, SL3, SL4, SU5&SH6), and participate in a structured badminton training program weekly minimum.

Dedicating the win for her late coach Bello Oyebanji, Eniola hopes that this win will further spur the public and the Nigerian Government’s interest in the development of Para badminton in the country. She promises to use her sudden plunge to stardom to advocate for the rights of persons living with disabilities and she advises parents not to lock up their children who have disabilities.

The President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria Mr. Francis Orbih Esq. appreciating the win stated that “Eniola’s win is very significant and exciting for the entire badminton family in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. It was a huge consolation to us all after the death of Bello Oyebanji”

The win has put Nigeria and Africa on the badminton World map” he further stated “with the win the future of Para-Badminton looks bright as we intend to build on Eniola’s history-making victory to create more awareness about Para-Badminton across Nigeria. Eniola Bolaji has brought honor and pride to our entire continent and as we continue to dedicate the Gold Medal to the late coach Bello, I would like to appreciate the entire BCA management for their effort and dedication to the growth of Para-badminton in Africa.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the President of the BCA Mr. Michel Bau, who sent his heartfelt congratulations to the entire Nigerian Para badminton community on this unprecedented achievement.

“This accomplishment is the result of the incessant and collective effort of your association and all other local stakeholders including the players, coaches, and administrators. We do not doubt that this accomplishment is a milestone in our history and will certainly encourage more countries to adopt and succeed in Para badminton” he said.

Since the inception of Para badminton in Africa in 2017, as part of its strategic plan, the BCA in collaboration with the BWF and the AGITOS foundation (the development division of the International Paralympic Committee, IPC) has been actively engaged in developing the Parasport in Africa by Organizing activities such as Player development camps, Coaches workshops, National Administrator’s Workshops, National Classifier Workshops, and Classification of new players to ensure Africa is fully represented at the debut of Para badminton at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. One such training was the one done in Nigeria in 2019 involving players and coaches where Eniola was discovered.

The BCA has endeavored to conduct Para badminton workshops and training camps every year in over 20 of their Member Associations. In 2018 the BCA collaborated with the BWF, AGITOS Foundation, and 5 African countries to host the first-ever Para-Badminton course in Africa. 12 Coaches from Cameroon, Congo DRC, Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda were trained. Further to this success, in 2019, another course was organized by the BCA in Nigeria and 20 Coaches from Algeria, Benin, Cameroon, Central Africa, Congo DRC, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Kenya Ghana, Madagascar, Mozambique, Niger, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. A total of 31 players from these countries were also trained.

La Nigériane Eniola Bolaji a battu l’Ukrainienne Oksana Kozyna 18-21, 21-14, 21-18 dans la catégorie SL3 pour remporter la toute première médaille d’or d’une joueuse Africaine de Para badminton hors du continent au Championnat International de Para badminton d’Espagne qui s’est terminé le dimanche 16 Mai 2021. Eniola s’est bien battue pour revenir d’un set en arrière et devenir la gagnante de son premier tournoi.

Née le 21 septembre 2005 à Ibadan, et élevée dans l’état de Kwara au Nigeria, Eniola a été découverte il y a 4 ans et a été entraînée par le regretté coach Bello Oyebanji qui a perdu la vie en préparant ce tournoi. Elle s’intéressait d’abord au tennis, mais le regretté entraîneur a vu son potentiel dans le Para badminton.

“Le défunt entraîneur était comme un père pour moi, un homme de discipline qui me soutenait. Il m’a incitée à faire du para badminton plutôt que du tennis et je suis heureuse des résultats”, a-t-elle déclaré.

Le conte de fée d’Eniola a commencé lorsqu’elle a été sélectionnée pour faire partie de l’équipe Nigériane de Para badminton en tant que joueuse junior, mais en raison du manque de sponsoring, elle n’a pas été exposée aux tournois. Son destin allait cependant changer en 2019 lorsqu’elle a participé au Camp d’Entraînement des Athlètes de Para badminton de la BCA qui s’est tenu à Abuja, au Nigeria, et s’est qualifiée pour le Programme de Bourse de Participation Féminine de la BWF, ce qui lui a permis de participer à son tout premier tournoi. La subvention annuelle de participation féminine Para badminton de la BWF offre des opportunités aux athlètes féminines Para de demander un soutien financier pour assister et être classé internationalement à plusieurs tournois sanctionnés par la BWF. Pour pouvoir bénéficier de la bourse de participation de la BWF, les athlètes doivent être affiliées à leur Fédération Nationale de Badminton, être éligibles pour être classées au niveau international par la BWF dans l’une des six catégories du Para badminton (WH1, WH2, SL3, SL4, SU5 & SH6), et participer à un programme d’entraînement structuré de badminton par semaine au minimum.

Dédiant cette victoire à son défunt entraîneur, Bello Oyebanji, Eniola espère que cette victoire stimulera davantage l’intérêt du public et du gouvernement Nigérian pour le développement du Para badminton dans le pays. Elle promet d’utiliser son soudain plongeon dans la célébrité pour défendre les droits des personnes vivant avec un handicap et elle conseille aux parents de ne pas enfermer leurs enfants handicapés.

Le Président de la Fédération Nigériane de Badminton, M. Francis Orbih Esq., en appréciant cette cette victoire déclare : “La victoire d’Eniola est très importante et passionnante pour toute la famille du badminton au Nigeria et en Afrique. C’est une grande consolation pour nous tous après le décès de Bello Oyebanji”.

‘’Cette victoire a placé le Nigéria et l’Afrique sur la carte mondiale du badminton”, a-t-il ajouté, “avec cette victoire, l’avenir du Para-badminton est prometteur, car nous avons l’intention de nous appuyer sur la victoire historique d’Eniola pour sensibiliser davantage le public au Para-badminton dans tout le Nigéria. Eniola Bolaji a apporté honneur et fierté à notre continent tout entier et, alors que nous continuons à dédier la médaille d’or à feu l’entraîneur Bello, je tiens à remercier l’ensemble de la direction de la BCA pour leurs efforts et dévouement pour la croissance du Para-badminton en Afrique.

Des sentiments similaires ont été exprimés par le président de la BCA, M. Michel Bau, qui a adressé ses sincères félicitations à l’ensemble de la communauté Nigériane de Para-badminton pour cet exploit sans précédent.

“Cet accomplissement est le résultat de l’effort incessant et collectif de votre association et de toutes les autres parties prenantes locales, y compris les joueurs, les entraîneurs et les administrateurs. Nous ne doutons pas que cet accomplissement est une étape importante dans notre histoire et encouragera certainement d’autres pays à adopter et à réussir dans le domaine du Para badminton”, a-t-il déclaré.

Depuis la création du Para badminton en Afrique en 2017, dans le cadre de son plan stratégique, la BCA, en collaboration avec la BWF et la fondation AGITOS (la division de développement du Comité International Paralympique, IPC), s’est activement engagée dans le développement du Parasport en Afrique en organisant des activités telles que des Camps de Développement des Joueurs, des Ateliers pour les Entraîneurs, des Ateliers pour les Administrateurs Nationaux, des ateliers pour les classificateurs nationaux et la Classification des nouveaux joueurs afin de s’assurer que l’Afrique soit pleinement représentée lors des débuts du Para badminton aux Jeux paralympiques de Tokyo 2020. L’une de ces formations a eu lieu au Nigeria en 2019, avec la participation de joueurs et d’entraîneurs où Eniola a été découvert.

La BCA s’est efforcée d’organiser des ateliers et des camps d’entraînement de Para badminton chaque année dans plus de 20 de ses Associations Membres. En 2018, la BCA a collaboré avec la BWF, la Fondation AGITOS et 5 pays africains pour organiser le tout premier cours de Para-badminton en Afrique. 12 entraîneurs du Cameroun, de la RDC, du Ghana, du Kenya et de l’Ouganda ont été formés. Suite à ce succès, en 2019, un autre cours a été organisé par la BCA au Nigeria et 20 entraîneurs d’Algérie, du Bénin, du Cameroun, de la Centrafrique, de la RDC, de l’Ethiopie, de la Côte d’Ivoire, du Kenya, du Ghana, de Madagascar, du Mozambique, du Niger, du Togo, de l’Ouganda, de la Zambie et du Zimbabwe. Un total de 31 joueurs venant de ces pays étaient également entraînés.
