Pandemic or not; Badminton is back in Egypt!

The Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA), in close collaboration with the Egypt Badminton Federation (EBF), recently conducted a Badminton World Federation (BWF) Level 1 Coaching Course, in Cairo, from the 2nd to the 9th of April 2021. A total of 12 National coaches comprising of 9 men and 3 women attended the course including one coach from Sudan. The BCA sponsored the participation of the coach from Sudan in line with their strategic plan to provide developing countries with opportunities to build their capacity. All the other participants were drawn from local clubs and National Team Players. This also was another great milestone for BCA, the just concluded training on 9th April 2021, marked the debut for BCA to conduct BWF courses in Arabic language.

Since 2015 the EBF has conducted two BWF level one courses, so far a total of 16 Egyptian Coaches including 12 men and 4 women have been trained.

Hosting of this course provided the much-needed momentum to resume badminton in the country despite the Covid 19 restrictions. The Level 1 course was an eye-opener to many of the participants and provided them an avenue to learn and broaden their coaching skills.

Bassam Tahseen, a national ranked junior and senior player said: ” Although I am studying Physical Education at the university, specializing in badminton, I have learned a lot from the course. The current African champion in Women’s and Mixed Doubles, Doha Hany was also one of the participants in the course: ” We have gained a lot of knowledge and science which we will implement in our training with children. I am happy to attend such a course.”

The BWF Coach Education Level 1 is the first of the four levels in the Coach Education framework. Launched at the beginning of 2012, it is the most fundamental course for Badminton Coaches. The course consists of 13 modules – outlining the Basic Coaching Principles including What to Coach, which explains the basic technical, tactical, and physical elements; and, How to Coach, that defines the basic elements of Coaching Methodology; and Planning and Delivery of progressive coaching sessions. Once a coach successfully completes Level one, they can now enrol for Level two and subsequently Levels three and four. However, the Level one course should enable one to train badminton.

Keeping with the momentum, on the 9th of April, the BCA, in collaboration with the EBF, organised an “AirBadminton Promo Launch” at Baron Empain Palace, one of the most beautiful and iconic landmarks in Egypt. The BCA’s main aim of using Baron Empain Palace as the venue for the launch was to introduce AirBadminton in Egypt, to showcase one of the beautiful landmarks in the country, and to achieve its mission in marketing Egypt as one of the prime locations to host international AirBadminton events, with the support of the EBF and local authorities, soon. The launch was fully supported by local sponsors in Egypt and was held in conjunction with the commemoration of the International Day of Peace and Sports whose aim is to unite people, in this case, through the AirBadminton event.

The event was graced by officials from the BCA, EBF, and the Egyptian government led by the Minister of Youth and Sports himself, His Excellency Dr. Ashraf Sobhy. Also present was, Dr. Aya Medany member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Athlete Commission and Chairman of the Egyptian National Olympic Committee Athlete Commission. The attendance of the ministry officials showed the great support and commitment that the Egyptian government gave to the new sport.

The day’s program included a visit and photoshoot of the Baron Empain Palace, an introduction to Airbadminton and a friendly competition. The friendly competition consisted of a ‘hybrid’ Mixed Team Relay Event with 2 teams. Each team consisted of 7 players (5 females and 2 males) and 5 matches (1 Men’s Doubles, 2 Women’s Doubles and 1 Mixed Triples) were played up to a total of 50 points. All the participants enjoyed and had an incomparable experience inside a historic and amazing venue.

This mix AirBadminton and the historical place, Baron Empain Palace, created a great interest among the top government officials and the public leading to a very positive image for the sport.

“The National federation is quite happy with the outcomes of the activity, the Air Shuttle V1 performance was satisfactory, and the friendly competition was well received by the participants” EBF President Mr. Hesham Eltohamy. He added: ” From the experience gathered today, we plan to have more activities on a larger scale at another historical site.”

Other partners who made the event a success included the Ministry of Youth and Sports, G- Global for marketing and Business Management, Tatweeg Sports News, and Local Authorities at the Baron Empain Palace.

La Confédération Africaine de Badminton (BCA), en étroite collaboration avec l’Egypt Badminton Federation (EBF), a récemment organisé un cours pour Entraîneurs de Niveau 1 de la Badminton World Federation (BWF), au Caire, du 2 au 9 avril 2021. Un total de 12 entraîneurs nationaux, dont 9 hommes et 3 femmes, ont participé à ce cours, y compris un entraîneur du Soudan. La BCA a sponsorisé la participation de l’entraîneur du Soudan, conformément à son plan stratégique visant à offrir aux pays en développement des opportunités de renforcer leurs capacités. Tous les autres participants étaient issus de clubs locaux et de joueurs de l’équipe nationale. La formation qui vient de s’achever le 9 avril 2021 a marqué une autre étape importante pour la BCA, car c’est la première fois que la BCA organise des cours de la BWF en langue arabe.

L’accueil de ce cours a fourni l’élan nécessaire à la reprise du badminton dans le pays malgré les restrictions de la Covid 19. Le cours de niveau 1 a ouvert les yeux de nombreux participants et leur a permis d’apprendre et d’élargir leurs compétences d’entraîneur.

L’actuelle championne d’Afrique en Doubles Femmes et Mixtes, Doha Hany, était également l’une des participantes au cours : ” Nous avons acquis beaucoup de connaissances et de science que nous mettrons en œuvre dans nos entraînements avec les enfants. Je suis heureuse de participer à une tel cours”.

La formation d’entraîneur BWF niveau 1 est le premier des quatre niveaux du cadre de formation des entraîneurs. Lancé au début de l’année 2012, il s’agit du cours le plus fondamental pour les entraîneurs de badminton. Le cours se compose de 13 modules – décrivant les principes de base de l’entraînement, notamment quoi entraîner, qui explique les éléments techniques, tactiques et physiques de base ; et, comment entraîner, qui définit les éléments de base de la méthodologie de l’entraînement ; et Planning and Delivery of progressive coaching sessions. Une fois qu’un entraîneur a terminé avec succès le niveau 1, il peut s’inscrire au niveau deux, puis aux niveaux trois et quatre. Toutefois, le cours de niveau 1 doit permettre d’entraîner le badminton.

Sur cette lancée, le 9 avril, la BCA, en collaboration avec l’EBF, a organisé un “AirBadminton Promo Launch” au Baron Empain Palace, l’un des sites les plus beaux et les plus emblématiques d’Égypte. L’objectif principal de la BCA, en utilisant le Baron Empain Palace comme lieu de lancement, était d’introduire l’AirBadminton en Égypte, de mettre en valeur l’un des plus beaux sites du pays, et d’accomplir sa mission en commercialisant l’Égypte comme l’un des meilleurs endroits pour accueillir des événements internationaux d’AirBadminton, avec le soutien de l’EBF et des autorités locales. Le lancement a été entièrement soutenu par des sponsors locaux en Égypte et s’est déroulé en conjonction avec la commémoration de la Journée internationale de la paix et du sport dont l’objectif est d’unir les gens, dans ce cas, par le biais de l’événement AirBadminton.

L’événement a été honoré par des officiels de la BCA, de l’EBF et du gouvernement égyptien, dirigé par le ministre de la Jeunesse et des Sports lui-même, Son Excellence le Dr Ashraf Sobhy. Aya Medany, membre de la commission des athlètes du Comité international olympique (CIO) et présidente de la commission des athlètes du Comité National Olympique Egyptien. La présence des représentants du ministère a montré le grand soutien et l’engagement du gouvernement égyptien envers ce nouveau sport.

Le programme de la journée comprenait une visite et une séance de photos du palais du Baron Empain, une introduction à l’AirBadminton et une compétition amicale. La compétition amicale consistait en une épreuve ‘’hybride’’ de relais par équipe mixte avec 2 équipes. Chaque équipe était composée de 7 joueurs (5 femmes et 2 hommes) et 5 matchs (1 double hommes, 2 doubles femmes et 1 triple mixte) ont été joués jusqu’à un total de 50 points. Tous les participants ont apprécié et vécu une expérience incomparable dans un lieu historique et étonnant.

Ce mélange d’AirBadminton et du lieu historique, le Palais du Baron Empain, a suscité un grand intérêt parmi les hauts fonctionnaires du gouvernement et le public, ce qui a donné une image très positive de ce sport.

“La fédération nationale est tout à fait satisfaite des résultats de l’activité, la performance de l’Air Shuttle V1 était satisfaisante, et la compétition amicale a été bien accueillie par les participants”, a déclaré le président de l’EBF, M. Hesham Eltohamy. Il a ajouté : “Grâce à l’expérience acquise aujourd’hui, nous prévoyons d’organiser d’autres activités à plus grande échelle sur un autre site historique”.

Parmi les autres partenaires qui ont fait de cet événement un succès, citons le ministère de la Jeunesse et des Sports, G- Global pour le marketing et la gestion des affaires, Tatweeg Sports News, et les autorités locales du Palais Baron Empain.
