Uganda Para badminton International Tournament 2021 Day 1

Debutants Mozambique register their first win while Hassan Mubiru and Julius Obura of Uganda sail through the SL4 category.

Mozambique had a good start on their first day at the Uganda Para badminton international in Kampala. Armando Manuel stunned Uganda’s Lawrence Lumiisa in the SL3 category 21-15 21-14 to give Mozambique their first-ever win at a Para badminton international tournament.

“It’s unimaginable for me to give my country this win. I came to this match scared since it was our first time to participate in any tournament.” An excited Armando said.

Mozambique was among the 7 countries supported by the Agitos Foundation support program to attend the Uganda Para badminton international tournament. Athletes and administrators from Algeria, Ethiopia, Ivory Coast, Niger, Uganda, and Zambia underwent a three-day technical workshop covering coach education, administration course, and player training camp.

“I wish to thank the Agitos Foundation, the BWF, and the BCA for the training they gave us before the tournament. It was of great help to me as I had not trained enough in my country.

I can’t put the feelings I have into words. I thank my teammates for cheering me on, and I would like to dedicate this win to them for the hard work they have put in. We only came to participate in this tournament, but after my win, the whole team has the belief we can do it. I want to send a message to all the Para players that Agitos is changing our lives.

In the SL4 category, Uganda’s Hassan Mubiru overcame Algeria’s Anis Benslama 21-8 23-21.

“The first game was easy for me, but I lost my concentration in the second game and made many mistakes. Anis is a good player. He took advantage of my loss of concentration and gave me a run for my money. I thank the Almighty I held on to win. Mubiri told the BCA Tv.

“I feel good that I won. It’s what I have been practicing for all my life. I am aiming to add more points and improve on my world ranking so I can qualify for the 2024 Paris Paralympics.

Training for this tournament has been difficult for me, but I thank my federation through Mr. Simon Mugabi, who has gone out of his way to assist me and our entire team. Finally, I hope I get to realize my dream of becoming a Para badminton coach through the support of the Agitos Foundation to uplift other Para badminton players in my community. He added.

Julius Obura of Uganda also did not disappoint. He won his SL4 Category match 21-14 21-11 against the young Niger Ousmane Habi Adamou, who gave a good account of himself despite this being his first tournament.

Uganda Badminton Association is hosting the Uganda Para badminton International for a record 4 times. The CEO Mr. Simon Mugabi in his speech at the closing ceremony of the Agitos Foundation emotionally announced his retirement in two years.

“I live, I sleep, I eat badminton,” he said to the tearful players, sad to see his exit. Mr. Simon is a Pillar in Africa in the development of Para badminton on the Continent.

Le Mozambique a bien démarré sa première journée au tournoi international de para badminton de l’Ouganda à Kampala. Armando Manuel a assommé l’Ougandais Lawrence Lumiisa dans la catégorie SL3 21-15 21-14 pour donner au Mozambique sa toute première victoire dans un tournoi international de Para badminton.

“C’est inimaginable pour moi de donner cette victoire à mon pays. Je suis venu à ce match effrayé puisque c’était notre première participation à un tournoi.” Un Armando tout excité a déclaré.

Le Mozambique faisait partie des 7 pays soutenus par le programme de soutien de la Fondation Agitos pour participer au tournoi international de para badminton en Ouganda. Des athlètes et des administrateurs d’Algérie, d’Éthiopie, de Côte d’Ivoire, du Niger, d’Ouganda et de Zambie ont participé à un atelier technique de trois jours portant sur la formation des entraîneurs, un cours d’administration et un camp d’entraînement pour les joueurs.

“Je tiens à remercier la Fondation Agitos, la BWF et la BCA pour la formation qu’elles nous ont dispensée avant le tournoi. Cela m’a été d’une grande aide car je ne m’étais pas assez entraîné dans mon pays. Je ne peux pas mettre de mots sur les sentiments que j’éprouve. Je remercie mes coéquipiers de m’avoir encouragé, et je voudrais leur dédier cette victoire pour le dur labeur qu’ils ont fourni. Nous sommes seulement venus pour participer à ce tournoi, mais après ma victoire, toute l’équipe est convaincue que nous pouvons y arriver. Je veux envoyer un message à tous les joueurs de Para que Agitos change nos vies.

Dans la catégorie SL4, l’Ougandais Hassan Mubiru a battu l’Algérien Anis Benslama 21-8 23-21.

“Le premier set a été facile pour moi, mais j’ai perdu ma concentration dans le deuxième set et j’ai fait beaucoup d’erreurs. Anis est un bon joueur. Il a profité de ma perte de concentration et m’a donné du fil à retordre. Je remercie le Tout-Puissant d’avoir tenu bon pour gagner. Mubiri a déclaré à la BCA Tv.

“Je me sens bien d’avoir gagné. C’est ce pour quoi je me suis entraîné toute ma vie. Je vise à ajouter plus de points et à améliorer mon classement mondial afin de pouvoir me qualifier pour les Jeux paralympiques de Paris en 2024.

L’entraînement pour ce tournoi a été difficile pour moi, mais je remercie ma fédération par l’intermédiaire de M. Simon Mugabi, qui s’est démené pour m’aider ainsi que toute notre équipe. Enfin, j’espère pouvoir réaliser mon rêve de devenir entraîneur de para badminton grâce au soutien de la Fondation Agitos, afin d’aider les autres joueurs de para badminton de ma communauté. Il a ajouté.

Julius Obura de l’Ouganda n’a pas non plus déçu. Il a remporté son match de catégorie SL4 21-14 21-11 contre le jeune Nigérien Ousmane Habi Adamou, qui a donné une bonne image de lui-même bien que ce soit son premier tournoi.

L’Association Ougandaise de Badminton accueille les Internationaux d’Ouganda pour une 4ème fois. Le Directeur Exécutif M. Simon Mugabi, dans son discours lors de la cérémonie de clôture de la Fondation Agitos, a annoncé avec émotion sa retraite dans deux ans.

“Je vis, je dors, je mange du badminton”, a-t-il dit aux joueurs en larmes, tristes de voir sa sortie. M. Simon est un pilier en Afrique dans le développement du Para badminton sur le continent.
