BENIN, EGYPT, AND INDIA GET THE FIRST MEDALS IN THE UGANDA PARA BADMINTON INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENT 2021

Douayra Prisca Marie carries Ivory Coast’s dream in the Women singles WH2

Shaimaa Samy Abdellatif from Egypt and India’s Ammu Mohan are the first athletes to win Gold in the Uganda Para badminton International 2021. The pair beat the combination of the Ghanaian Adizatu Abubakari and Lucienne Akpoton Kikisagbe of Benin 21-3 21-3.

Adizatu and Lucienne are competing for the first time in an International tournament through the BWF Female Participation Grant.

“I am happy to get Silver in this competition. It’s payback for the struggles I have gone through in my life, and I want to sincerely thank the BWF, BCA, and Benin Badminton Federation for the support they have given me.” Said Lucienne.

Lucienne will be later facing it off with Shaimaa for Gold at the finals of women singles WH1.

“Looking forward to this Match, I know Shaimaa is very good and experienced, but I have nothing to lose so I will give it my all. She added.

Benin Badminton Federation has been one of the Member Associations in Africa that has received support to develop Para badminton players.

“It’s historic to have a Benin player in the finals. Benin’s Badminton Federation President, Mr. Aubin Assogba said.

Our country is proud of Lucienne’s performance at the championships. We did not expect this achievement. I wish to congratulate the entire Benin team on a job well done. I also take this opportunity to thank the BWF and BCA who have been instrumental in this achievement by supporting these women through the Female Participation Grant Programme. This achievement is also the result of the fruitful partnership between the Benin Badminton Federation and the Benin National Paralympic Committee, which spared no effort to support this expedition to Uganda. We know that the task ahead won’t be easy during this final, but the victory will be ours. He concluded.

As per its strategic plan, the BCA continues to offer technical support, training, and scholarships in Para badminton to all its Member Associations based on merit.

One such Association is the Ivorian Badminton Federation which received training in the 3rd African Para badminton workshop held in Nigeria in 2019.

First of all, I would like to thank God for making this possible. I must confess that, I shed a little tear of joy when I watched Douayra qualify for the finals in the women singles WH2 category. I am very proud of her, and from Abidjan, she has demonstrated her passion for para-badminton. She travelled several kilometres from her area of Dabou to get to the INJS to train every Wednesday. Thank you to the Coaches, the entire Ivorian Delegation, and good luck to our player in her quest for the gold medal. As the founding father of the modern Olympic Games, the Honourable Pierre de Coubertin, would say, the main thing for us was our participation. God bless Uganda. President Honoré Zolobe told BCA Tv.

Douayra will be carrying Ivory Coast’s hopes to win the first-ever Gold Medal in a Para badminton International Tournament in the women singles WH2. She will be playing against Ammu Mohan of India.

The pressure is real. My country and teammate’s hopes are on me. It will be a difficult match considering Ammu is an experienced player, but I am well prepared. She said.

Shaimaa Samy Abdellatif de l’Egypte et Ammu Mohan de l’Inde sont les premières athlètes à gagner l’or dans les Internationaux de Para badminton d’Ouganda 2021. La paire a battu la combinaison du Ghanéen Adizatu Abubakari et de Lucienne Akpoton Kikisagbe du Bénin 21-3 21-3.

Adizatu et Lucienne participent pour la première fois à un tournoi international grâce à la bourse de participation féminine de la BWF.

“Je suis heureuse d’obtenir l’argent dans cette compétition. C’est une revanche pour les luttes que j’ai traversées dans ma vie, et je tiens à remercier sincèrement la BWF, la BCA et la Fédération Béninoise de Badminton pour le soutien qu’elles m’ont apporté.” a déclaré Lucienne.

Lucienne affrontera plus tard Shaimaa pour l’or lors de la finale du Simple Dame WH1.

“Je sais que Shaimaa est très bonne et expérimentée, mais je n’ai rien à perdre donc je vais tout donner. a-t-elle ajouté.

La Fédération Béninoise de Badminton est l’une des Fédérations Membres en Afrique qui a reçu un soutien pour développer les joueurs de Par badminton.

“C’est historique d’avoir un joueur béninois en finale. a déclaré le président de la Fédération béninoise de badminton, M. Aubin Assogba.

Notre pays est fier de la performance de Lucienne aux championnats. Nous ne nous attendions pas à cet exploit. Je tiens à féliciter toute l’équipe du Bénin pour son excellent travail. Je profite également de l’occasion pour remercier la BWF et la BCA qui ont joué un rôle déterminant dans cette réussite en soutenant ces femmes par le biais du Programme de subvention à la participation féminine. Cet exploit est également le résultat du partenariat fructueux entre la Fédération Béninoise de Badminton et le Comité National Paralympique du Bénin, qui n’ont ménagé aucun effort pour soutenir cette expédition en Ouganda. Nous savons que la tâche qui nous attend lors de cette finale ne sera pas facile, mais la victoire sera la nôtre. A-t-il conclu.

Conformément à son plan stratégique, la BCA continue d’offrir un soutien technique, des formations et des bourses d’études en para badminton à toutes ses Fédérations Membres en fonction de leur mérite.

L’une de ces Fédérations est la Fédération Ivoirienne de Badminton qui a bénéficié d’une formation lors du 3ème Atelier Africain de Para badminton qui s’est tenu au Nigeria en 2019.

Tout d’abord, je voudrais remercier Dieu d’avoir rendu cela possible. Je dois avouer que, j’ai versé une petite larme de joie lorsque j’ai vu Douayra se qualifier pour les finales dans la catégorie Simple Dame WH2. Je suis très fière d’elle, et depuis Abidjan, elle a démontré sa passion pour le Para-badminton. Elle parcourt plusieurs kilomètres depuis sa région de Dabou pour se rendre à l’INJS pour s’entraîner tous les mercredis. Merci aux entraîneurs, à toute la délégation ivoirienne, et bonne chance à notre joueuse dans sa quête de la médaille d’or. Comme le dirait le père fondateur des Jeux Olympiques Modernes, l’honorable Pierre de Coubertin, l’essentiel pour nous était notre participation. Que Dieu bénisse l’Ouganda. Douayra portera les espoirs de la Côte d’Ivoire de remporter la toute première médaille d’or dans un tournoi International de Para badminton en Simple Dame WH2. Elle jouera contre Ammu Mohan de l’Inde.

La pression est réelle. Les espoirs de mon pays et de mes coéquipières reposent sur moi. Ce sera un match difficile, car Ammu est une joueuse expérimentée, mais je suis bien préparée. Elle a déclaré.
