Hadia Hosny Bags the Prestigious African Women in Badminton Award (AWIBA)

The Badminton Confederation Africa (BCA) awarded the 2020 AWIBA award to the 32-year-old Egyptian, Queen of African Badminton, Miss. Hadia Hosny. Launched in October 2018, the annual AWIBA award was introduced by the BCA Council to reward outstanding women who have contributed to the development of badminton in Africa by demonstrating irreproachable attitude and dedication to the sport in their respective fields, to motivate women to get involved in badminton, to create role models for other women and to celebrate the achievements of African women in badminton.

Member Associations nominate candidates for this award and submit them to the BCA Women in Badminton Commission (WIB) chaired by Dr. Leshota from Lesotho. In 2018, Gretha Prinsloo from South Africa won the award while in 2019; Obiageli Solaja from Nigeria was the recipient of the Award. The winner of AWIBA award is normally invited for the BCA AGM to receive the award but due to the Covid 19 Pandemic travel restrictions this will not be possible.

Bestowing the award to Hadia, Dr. Leshota said “it has given us immense pleasure to award this third edition of the AWIBA to Ms Hadia Hosny. Hadia’s accolades follow from her unprecedented performance on court: 2 titles won at the All Africa championships in Egypt; achieving a BWF world ranking of 35 with her partner, Doha Hany, and many more. She has participated in two Olympic games and became the first African player to win a match at the Olympics in 2008. She is a coach as well. Off court Hadia is a politician advocating for interests of women in parliament. Hadia is an example of an African woman who has made Africa badminton very proud. She is internationally recognised for all her great achievements. She is indeed a confirmation of why we need to keep the AWIBA award alive.

Miss Hadia’s stellar performance and contribution to badminton stretches all the way from when she was 11 years old. Before she switched to badminton, she was playing rhythmic gymnastics, squash and horse riding. Her best performance as an athlete was in 2020 where she won 2 Gold and 2 Bronze medals in the All Africa Senior Badminton Championships 2020. As a first in several precedents, Hadia, alongside her long-time doubles partner Miss. Doha Hany, achieved the highest BWF ranking in badminton, by any African player or pair, of 35th in the world. This unprecedented achievement, makes Miss Hadia certain to secure a third participation in badminton at the Tokyo Olympics. She previously participated in the Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics making her the first Egyptian and Arabian player to ever participate in 2 Badminton Olympic Games and win a match.

Hadia also wears many hats, besides her prowess in Badminton, she is an assistant lecturer at the Pharmacology Department, Cairo University and a Member of the Egyptian parliament. In 2017, she was given the opportunity to study at the Presidential leadership program, which gave her a chance to get into politics. The program enabled her to clinch the member of parliament position to represent her constituency in the Egyptian Parliament as the representative of the Youth and Women. A position she had vied for in 2015 but lost.

“My political career is mainly because of badminton, usually when I get chosen for anything it’s because of my achievements on court. The fact that I am a woman or I represent women in everything is minimal. I am lucky to be in a country that supports women and recognises their achievements everyday” She said while receiving her award.

Hadia is also a BWF Coach Level 2, Shuttle Time Tutor, and Founder at Hadia Badminton Academy, Heliopolis & Black Ball sporting club in Egypt where mostly girls are trained in sports and mentored in other social roles. This recognition by the BCA for her incredible performance and efforts in developing badminton in Africa as a woman will go a long way in motivating the girls in her academy and women in badminton in the whole continent.

La Confédération Africaine de Badminton (BCA) a décerné le prix AWIBA 2020 à l’Égyptienne de 32 ans, Reine du Badminton Africain, Mlle. Hadia Hosny. Lancé en octobre 2018, le prix annuel AWIBA a été introduit par le Conseil de la BCA pour récompenser les femmes exceptionnelles qui ont contribué au développement du badminton en Afrique en faisant preuve d’une attitude et d’un dévouement irréprochables envers ce sport dans leurs domaines respectifs, pour motiver les femmes à s’impliquer dans le badminton, pour créer des modèles pour les autres femmes et pour célébrer les réalisations des Femmes Africaines dans le Badminton.

Les Associations Membres désignent des candidates pour ce prix et les soumettent à la Commission des Femmes dans le Badminton (WIB) de la BCA, présidée par le Dr Leshota du Lesotho. En 2018, Gretha Prinsloo, d’Afrique du Sud, a remporté le prix, tandis qu’en 2019, Obiageli Solaja, du Nigeria, en a été la lauréate. La lauréate du prix AWIBA est normalement invité à l’AGA de la BCA pour recevoir le prix, mais en raison des restrictions de voyage liées à la pandémie de Covid 19, cela ne sera pas possible.

En remettant le prix à Hadia, le Dr Leshota a déclaré : “Nous avons eu l’immense plaisir de décerner cette troisième édition de l’AWIBA à Mme Hadia Hosny. Les accolades d’Hadia découlent de ses performances sans précédent sur le court : Deux titres remportés lors des Championnats d’Afrique en Égypte, un classement mondial BWF de 35 avec sa partenaire, Doha Hany, et bien d’autres choses encore. Elle a participé à deux Jeux olympiques et est devenue la première joueuse africaine à remporter un match aux Jeux olympiques de 2008. Elle est également entraîneur. En dehors du terrain, Hadia est une femme politique qui défend les intérêts des femmes au parlement. Hadia est un exemple de femme africaine qui a rendu le badminton africain très fier. Elle est reconnue internationalement pour toutes ses grandes réalisations. Elle confirme pourquoi nous devons maintenir le prix AWIBA.

Les performances exceptionnelles de Mlle Hadia et sa contribution au badminton remontent à l’âge de 11 ans. Avant de passer au badminton, elle pratiquait la gymnastique rythmique, le squash et l’équitation. Sa meilleure performance en tant qu’athlète a eu lieu en 2020, lorsqu’elle a remporté deux médailles d’or et deux médailles de bronze lors des Championnats d’Afrique Seniors de Badminton 2020. Comme une première dans plusieurs précédents, Hadia, aux côtés de sa partenaire de double de longue date Mlle. Doha Hany, a atteint le plus haut classement BWF en badminton, par un joueur ou une paire africaine, soit le 35e rang mondial. Cet exploit sans précédent permet à Mlle Hadia de s’assurer une troisième participation en badminton aux Jeux olympiques de Tokyo. Elle a déjà participé aux Jeux olympiques de Beijing 2008 et de Londres 2012, ce qui fait d’elle la première joueuse égyptienne et arabe à participer à deux Jeux olympiques de badminton et à remporter un match.

Hadia porte également de plusieurs autres casquettes, outre ses prouesses en badminton, elle est Maître de Conférences au Département de Pharmacologie de l’Université du Caire et membre du parlement égyptien. En 2017, elle a eu l’opportunité d’étudier au programme de leadership présidentiel, ce qui lui a donné une chance de se lancer en politique. Ce programme lui a permis de décrocher le poste de député pour représenter sa circonscription au Parlement Egyptien en tant que représentante des jeunes et des femmes. Un poste pour lequel elle avait concouru en 2015 mais qu’elle avait perdu.

“Ma carrière politique est principalement due au badminton, généralement quand je suis choisie pour quoi que ce soit, c’est grâce à mes réalisations sur le court. Le fait que je sois une femme ou que je représente les femmes dans tout est minime. J’ai la chance d’être dans un pays qui soutient les femmes et reconnaît leurs réalisations au quotidien”, a-t-elle déclaré en recevant son prix.

Hadia est également entraîneuse BWF niveau 2, tutrice Shuttle Time et fondatrice de la Hadia Badminton Academy, à Héliopolis et du club sportif Black Ball en Égypte, où la plupart des filles sont formées au sport et encadrées dans d’autres rôles sociaux. Cette reconnaissance de la BCA pour ses incroyables performances et ses efforts pour développer le badminton en Afrique en tant que femme contribuera grandement à motiver les filles de son académie et les femmes dans le badminton sur tout le continent.
